Captain Jon A. McBride, USN, Retired

1943-2024

Jon A. McBride, a decorated Navy pilot, was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1978. He served as lead chase pilot for Columbia’s maiden flight, verified shuttle software in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory, and was capsule communicator for STS-5, STS-6, and STS-7. 

McBride piloted Challenger on STS-41G in 1984, which deployed the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite and tested spacewalk refueling techniques. He later served as NASA’s assistant administrator for congressional relations at NASA Headquarters.
