April 4 First Thursday Program -- UHCL Archives Update + NASA History and Archives status

  • 4 Apr 2024
  • 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
  • JSC Gilruth Lone Star Room

Our featured speaker this month is Mr.  Matthew Peek, the UH-CL Archivist. Matthew is the Associate Director of the UHCL University Archives and Special Collections, a role he has held since March 2022.  A primary focus as the UH-CL Archivist is to collect, preserve, and protect the history of JSC and Human Spaceflight.  The NASA Alumni League provides support to the UH-CL Archives and is building an endowment to fund its future work.

Before coming to UH-CL, from 2014-2022 Matthew worked as the Military Collection Archivist for the State Archives of North Carolina, managing a broad variety of materials and veteran's oral history for all war periods.  His work enabled the state of NC to provide WWI centennial commemorations, and the 75th anniversary commemoration of WWII.

A native of northeast Ohio, Matthew Peek holds a B.A. in History, and a dual M.A. in American History and Public History (archival studies) from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. He is a Certified Archivist through the Academy of Certified Archivists.  He also has worked and volunteered for numerous historical societies and archives.

Before Mr. Peek's presentation, we will hear from Ms. Jessica Kelly, the NASA Archivist, as well as from Dr. Jennifer Ross-Nazzal, the NASA Human Spaceflight Historian.  Jessica is a Houston area native; she holds a master's degree in Library Science from the University of North Texas.  As the NASA Archivist, she is standing up the permanent Agency web archiving program, assisting the NASA Center archives with the migration of their archival materials into NASA’s Agency-wide virtual archive.

As the NASA Human Spaceflight Historian, Jennifer Ross-Nazzal provides real-time resource and reference assistance to internal and external customers, sharing her expertise with many NASA areas, broadcasting agencies, documentarians, and others. From 2004-2022, she served as the JSC Historian. She has published two books, and several book chapters and essays for which she has received numerous awards.  Jennifer holds a PhD from Washington State University.
